In the 21st century, characterized as the era of intelligent medical care, providing a suitable empathic communication training program for clinical teachers has emerged as a crucial concern for the faculty development of medical personnel in hospitals. We conducted a retrospective analysis of data from two groups of clinical teachers undergoing empathic communication training at Kaohsiung Veterans General Hospital in 2022. The target group comprised 12 medical personnel’s seed teachers who participated in“The Composite Experiential Empathic Communication Training Module”(which includes simulation experience, inter-professional discussion, and empathy lecture) (n = 31). The control group consisted of nurse teachers who attended only the empathy lecture (n = 74). Before and after the training course, all teachers completed the Jefferson Empathy Scale and self-rating score. The main findings from the statistical tests indicate that, firstly, the total score of the empathy scale and self-rating score significantly improved in both groups after training. However, the target group exhibited a significant elevation in all three scale factors and up to 18 items. Secondly, the target group demonstrated a significantly higher training effect than the control group in two scale factors (compassionate care, standing in others’shoes) and self-rating score. These results underscore the effectiveness of our innovative module in providing empathic communication training for clinical teachers. We believe that our unique experience can serve as a valuable reference for designing empathic communication training programs for all medical personnel teachers in the future. |
