The purpose of this study is to analyze the content of life education picture books, recommended by Ministry of Culture, ROC, from 2010 to 2019. The study adopted content analysis including quantitative and qualitative approaches to analyze 293 picture books. Firstly, the study explores the proportion of published books as well as the choice of their literary genre. Secondly, five life education themes, including Philosophical Thinking, Exploration of Hominology, Value Speculation, Ultimate Concern and Spiritual Cultivation, are discussed. Finally, the study indicates some inspiring parts in the life education picture books which are classified in five themes. The findings are as follows:①Life education picture books occupy 14.31% among 293 picture books from 2010 to 2019. Especially in 2013, the number of life education picture books reaches its peak-25%, whereas the lowest number is shown in 2010, only 9% of picture books are categorized into the type of life education. ②The proportion of life education picture books may be related to social context in some ways. ③Nearly 50% of life education picture books use the form of “child story-daily life story”, which takes the vital part. By contrast, “myth” and “child story-folklore” are the less adapted forms, which only occupy about 1%. ④As for the five life education themes, Theme 1 “Philosophical Thinking” is the biggest theme which contains more than 60% life education picture books. Theme 5 “Spiritual Cultivation” is the second most common theme, which contains about 50% works. When it comes to sub-topics, the number of Theme 1-1 “Discussing daily issue and cultivating proper thoughts and attitude” is in first place, and Theme 2-2 “Understanding individuals are thoughtful, emotive and self-determined” ranks number two. ⑥The least two sub-topics are Theme 1-2 “Requiring the ability of thinking and cultivating the appropriate skills to face challenges in life” and Theme 3-2 “Exploring the difference between happy and happiness”. |
