By employing both text mining and corpus linguistic analysis, this study examines the diplomatic discourses presented in Xi Jinping’s diplomatic speeches. More specifically, this study analyzes the data using collocational network and keyness keyword analysis. A total of 1,129 texts of Xi’s diplomatic speeches from November 2012 to November 2022 were collected as the target corpus, which was compared with a self-constructed reference corpus collected from Xi’s addresses on defense, politics, and party building. We conclude that three recurring themes of discourse emerge from Xi’s diplomatic speeches: development and cooperation, the Belt and Road Initiative, and the win-win scenario. Result based on keyword analysis reveals that win-win cooperation, strategic partnership, and a community of shared future for mankind are key concepts in Xi’s diplomatic speeches. Overall, Xi Jinping’s diplomatic language constructs an external image of China as a country of amicability, friendliness, and with willingness to cooperate with others. However, his discourses on strategic partnership and community of a shared future hint that strategic thinking and expanding ideology are still the core of China’s international relations with the aim of restructuring the world order by their own agenda. |
