This research focuses on the soteriology of Daesoon Jinrihoe, a new religious movement native to South Korea. The research first discusses the social context of Korea towards the end of the 19th century and the emergence of Daesoon Thought at that time. Second, it examines the features of Daesoon Jinrihoe´s soteriology through the concepts outlined in their Four Major Doctrines. Though based on the religious thought of Kang Jeungsan (1871-1909), Daesoon Jinrihoe has established its own unique doctrines and practices. Third, this work investigates Daesoon Jinrihoe´s engagement in contemporary society, what kind of social roles it plays, and how both are grounded in its particular soteriology. Daesoon Jinrihoe believes that the Former World was on the verge of extinction due to the dominance of mutual contention(相剋,상극). In response, the Supreme God descended into the world as Jeungsan and undertook the Reordering Works of Heaven and Earth(天地公事, 천 지 공 사) and transformed the world by facilitating a shift from mutual contention into mutual beneficence(相生,상생). Nevertheless, humanity´s belief in Jeungsan as the Supreme God and the religious practices that are associated with it are prerequisites for truly realizing an ideal world. |
