This study investigated karibari drying boards, their origins and historical background, and the techniques and materials used for their manufacture to elucidate the process of using such boards to dry objects and the potential applications of such boards in conservation treatments. In this article, I summarise the role of each paper layer in the manufacturing of karibari boards and discuss the various materials used in drying board systems. The information presented here in provides insights into how drying board-based methods can be used to optimise the drying process in terms of space and time and is therefore of practical significance for East Asian painting conservation studios and laboratories tasked with the preservation of numerous paper-based cultural artefacts. I also discuss alternative drying boards mentioned in the relevant Western literature. This study contributes to the body of literature on the conservation of various paper-based cultural artefacts and may serve as a reference for conservators and conservation studios interested in expanding their capacity for manufacturing drying boards. |
