This paper is a re-reading of Paradise in the Sea of Sorrow with the assistance of AI technology, focusing on the relationship between Minamata disease and the characters. First, the quantitative text analysis software KH Coder was used to analyze Paradise in the Sea of Sorrow. Through three types of cooccurrence networks, we found that the strongest relationship between the two lexical terms “Minamata disease” and “factory” is found in Chapter 2. Then, textual analysis focusing on the relationship between the two vocabulary terms “Minamata disease” and “factory” suggests that the use of “Minamata disease” in Chapter 2 is related to criticism of the “factory”. In addition, an analysis of the characters’ attitudes toward the factory shows that the ambiguity of the word “factory” is present in the text. It can be said to represent Minamata’s conflict. |
