Statins, which are competitive inhibitor of HMGCoA (3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl-coenzyme A) reductase, reduce cholesterol blood levels. Because they can down regulate products of the mevalonate pathway. In addition to this main activity, statins show pleiotropic effects such as antitoxidant, induce apoptosis, anti-inflammatory, anti-angiogenenic, and anti-proliferative pro-perties. These seem to support the beneficial effect and the mechanism of statin use on cancer patients. Several studies demonstrated the persistent use of statins were associated with a lower ovarian cancer risk, and improved survival rate, but other studies reported no effect. Therefore, more studies are needed to clarify these controversial results. |
