This is a case study of the legal history of the Qing Dynasty, a brief description of Hong-Zheng who was a member of the royal family involved in land infringements and subsequent legal disputes. The ruling Qianlong Emperor was very concerned about this legal case and, therefore, personally intervened in the trial, even affected the final verdicts. This article resurrects the case by analyzing the original data as recorded in the Qing Dynasty official files. In addition to discussing the lingering and/or unanswered questions, the article also demonstrates that the emperor did take the royal family relationship into consideration in this legal case, reduce the final penalties, and show the sibling loving side of the human nature. |
