Obesity prevention is a critical constituent of health promotion in national social policy. In 2015, the BMI of 24 patients at a psychiatric day ward was monitored, and their mean BMI was 26.9 kg/m²; 71% them had a BMI of ≥25 kg/m². The objective of this project was to develop a health promotion program for weight loss. Analyzing patients’ current health conditions revealed they had poor food choices, lacked correct dietary concepts and awareness, and lacked exercise awareness and behavior. Accordingly, we formulated an improvement program to provide dietary and nutrition-related nursing guidance, use cognitive-behavioral group therapy to establish healthy weight loss and exercise knowledge, and integrate regular exercise with an incentive system, thereby increasing exercise motivation among patients and achieve the project objectives. The results revealed that the mean body weight of 17 overweight patients was reduced from 75.4 kg to 71.6 kg, and their mean BMI was reduced from 28.9 kg/m² to 27.5 kg/m². Therefore, the project objectives were achieved. The experience gained from this project can be used as a reference for subsequent weight loss schemes. |
