“The Power Plant”was a colloquial poetry written by Miyazawa Kenji. Its first draft of April 2nd 1925 was renamed“To the Mechanic Mr. Y at the Power Plant”before being published under a renewed title“Love and Loath to Poetry”in the poetry periodical The Generation of Poets in March 1933. This paper intends to critically examine the creation process of“The Power Plant”to explore the meanings behind the three different titles, and to demystify why Miyazaki waited until 1933 to publish a poem based on his experience back in 1925. This research finds that changes of the title reflect Miyazawa’s awareness of various issues in different times. Furthermore, the paper also sheds a new light on how Miyazaki recognized and evaluated, in particular, his own literary creation in his late years. |
