The World Music curriculum is an important project in multicultural education. The setting up of a course and the practice of teaching reflect the ideological and educational trend of the times, and constantly collide with the national policy and social reality, which has tempered the achievements. Taiwan's world music curriculum has been influenced by USA’s multiculturalism, as well as the introduction of Western ethnomusicology. However, due to its geographic location, historical conditions, political and social background, cultural context and institutional basis, it has developed its particularity to meet its own need. While constantly having communication with international music and music education institutions, Taiwan presents the situation of 'western disciplines, the various countries' experience, and domestic reconstruction.' This paper reveals the power struggle and mutual relationship between“Superculture,”“Subculture”and“cross-culture”in Taiwan, facing the challenge of globalization. How can we value local music and shape our own diverse identities while at the same time engaging in dialogue and mutual affirmation with other peoples and creating a shared prosperity? Based on postmodern discursive multi-perspectives, this paper examines the world music education in Taiwan in the context of multicultural education. By observing and analyzing the setting and transformation of world music teaching in Taiwan, this paper discusses the significance of the times and the problems, as well as prospects of multicultural music education in the future. |
