This article reconsiders feminist theology to focus on women’s scriptures in the New Testament Gospels. Feminist theology is neither theology simply written by women, nor theology simply written for women; it is theology that is deeply concerned with women’s oppression and takes this issue as its starting point. This article encompasses almost every passage of the Gospels concerned with women and is divided into four sections. To begin, I first briefly explain the relationship between the Bible and feminist theology. Next, I undertake a categorical analysis of women’s stories in the Gospels to develop a general picture of the several kinds of roles that women customarily play within them. Then, I select several stories or dialogues with abundant plot details, whether rich and interesting content or space for further development, to closely and carefully analyze. Such stories include those concerning Jesus’s mother and the women who came to anoint Jesus with fragrant perfumes and ointments during banquets, as well as a passage on Jesus’s commentary on divorce. The concluding section discusses the relationship between feminist exegesis and imagination. |
