In 'Japanese Classical Literature' class, some students asked about the meaning of the time noun 'three years' in 'Azusa-yumi' (梓弓)in paragraph 24 of Ise Monogatari(伊勢物語). Taking the question as a stepping stone, I began to look into the quantifier of 'three years. 'Then, after some research, I came across the paper, 'Tricolon Meeting the Criteria of Teaching Materials for Active Learning: The Variety of Cultural Differences between English and Japanese,' by Kohji Yoshimura. However, Yoshimura's paper only deals with the number '3' itself. In fact, in existing literature, there is no extensive discussion on the whole cultural significance of the term 'three years'. Therefore, this paper aims to focus on the word 'three years' in Japanese, exploring its function and cultural representations." |
