Under the trend of internationalization and media development, the demand for audiovisual translation has been increasing. However, the research of audiovisual translation is relatively little compared to that of general literary translation. Among them, there are even few studies on the Chinese subtitle translation of Japanese movies. The greatest difficulty in translation is the translation of cross-cultural elements; and the most important feature of video subtitles is that their presentation is limited by screen space and dialogue time. Under the constraints of cultural elements and time and space, the translation strategy of film and television subtitles is different from ordinary texts. The research object is the Chinese subtitles of the Japanese film,“Departures”(Japanese:おくりびと), which won the Best Foreign Language Film of Oscar Awards in 2009. The study aims to analyze the translation methods and translation effects of the cross-cultural elements in the film. This research first adopts Pedersen’s (2011) 12 classifications of cross-cultural elements as criteria to select cultural vocabularies, and then uses Cheng’s (2017) translation strategy as a framework to examine the translation strategies of cultural vocabularies in Japanese-Chinese translation films." |
