"Although the effect of mindfulness training for prisoners or inmates has been confirmed, most of the papers focus on its efficacy. The actual implementation of mindfulness training in classroom is rarely discussed. However, this is the key factor for the effectiveness of mindfulness training. Nowadays mindfulness is widely taught. Due to the great differences of subject and environment, the teaching concept, logic, and method are quite different inside and outside the prison or correctional institution. It takes lots of effort to investigate and adjust for the mindfulness teachers.
This article discusses the process and experience of teaching mindfulness in correctional institutions in northern Taiwan by means of action research which suggests:
This article frankly discusses the situations encountered in the mindfulness classroom in correctional institution, for example: what if it feels stuck in the group, what if the inmate falls in love with the leader? What are the difficulties of applying the practices of mindfulness-based stress reduction (MBSR) program to the correctional institution? How to help the inmates learn and integrate mindfulness into their lives in the correctional institution? Besides there are short verbatim summary of the last class and the after-class interviews.
Sincerely I hope this article is useful for those who teach or plan to teach mindfulness in prison or correctional institution, ex.: reducing the groping process and frustration, adjusting self-condition quicker, holding the group dynamics and course rhythm better. The final aim is to help the inmates or prisoners to learn mindfulness in a suitable way, so that they could know how to take good care of themselves, that increases the possibility of healthy living while in prison or correctional institution and after release." |
