"San Mao (1943-1991) was a cultural miracle of the seventies and eighties during the 20^(th) Century in Taiwan. She dominated the field of popular literature for ten years before Taiwan's lifting of martial law in 1987. San Mao's wide travel offered the closed island a peak into the outside world and her clean and natural writing, with a distinct ''anti-social'' and ''anti-establishment'' attitude, provided for young students under the pressure of strict examination an outlaw model and a mirage happy paradise. This paper focuses on vagrant writer San Mao's self image. She was an outcast most of her life and yet she found her eternal peace merging into nature. Topics examined here include: clown, imprisonment, suicide, woman vagrant, child of nature, Jose and cultural merchandise." |
