"A prediction procedure of manoeuvring hydrodynamic coefficients for the bulk carrier is proposed in this study. A real-time ship simulator, UMS, which is based on the MMG model has been used for the sea trial simulations to verify the manoeuvring mathematical model of ship. This mathematical model includes the seakeeping and manoeu-vring characteristics and the hydrodynamic coefficients are estimated with empirical formula or database from pub-lished papers. It is found that the empirical formula proposed by Inoue (1981) cannot be applied to the mathematical model of the bulk carrier. A series of factor study for the hydrodynamic coefficients were carried out to investigate the turning characteristics of the bulk carrier. Based on the numerical analyses of hydrodynamic coefficients, the standard operating procedure of the parameter adjustments for the mathematical model of ship simulator has been modelled. Finally, the numerical predicting model of manoeuvring characteristics has been carried out to predict the manoeuvring performance of the bulk carrier and validated with the sea trial data. This study can provide a good mathematical model of ship simulator for teaching, training and research in the field of marine navigation." |
