"The present paper takes the research performed by remarkable scholars of the Republican era of China as a starting point to reflect on their intellectual legacy and our debts owed to them regarding interpretations of Zhuangzi. It attempts to problematize the conclusions they reached in said interpretations, namely “void-peace theory” 虛靜論, and explores the profound humanistic creative spirit and ultimate basis of the thought of Zhuangzi through Wang Fuzhi’s 王夫之 (1619-1692) idea of “substance-function theory” 體用論. Furthermore, this paper tries to identify the philosophical imagination that Zhuangzi may trigger within the logic of cultural production and to provide an alternative theoretical position for understanding the thought found in the work." |
