"Rail capacity analysis is an important tool to evaluate the transport capacity of light rail transit systems. However, most methods for light rail transit systems estimate the capacity of each critical point separately without considering the impacts of transit flow between upstream and downstream points. Although the capacity analysis models for conventional railway systems could analyze the capacity for continuous rail sections, they cannot be applied to light rail transit systems since the characteristics of these two systems are different. For this reason, this study develops a rail capacity simulation model of continuous sections for light rail transit systems with type A and B right of ways, taking into account the features of light rail transit systems and the impacts of roadway intersection signals along the transit line. Finally, we take the Kaohsiung Light Rail Transit as an example to analyze its capacity and investigate the impacts of signal cycles and offset on capacity. The research results show that the light rail capacity of continuous sections is mainly affected by the maximum signal cycle along the line, and the offsets of the signals at different intersections will affect the journey time of the light rail train. When planning a light rail transit system, the results of this research can be used to evaluate the impact of different signal timing plans on the capacity of the system, the operation time of the light rail train, and the fleet size, which will help promote the light rail transit projects." |
