This study adopts sections in which Jia Bao-yu egressed from Daguan Garden to discuss the narrative implications of events that occured outside the Daguan Garden, where the main story events took place. Upon compiling these incidents, I revealed that Bao-yu egressed primarily for two reasons, namely family-related activities and personal factors. In sections that he egressed due to family-related activities, the story unveiled the chaos happening outside the Jia Mansion and described the influences of religious activities on the Jia family . These sections depicted the loosening of the order in the Jia family and foreshadowed the fate of the family. Sections pertaining to Bao-yu egressing due to personal matters included not only events in which Bao-yu attended merry feasting and get-togethers with friends, but also two events that were closely related to death, namely Bao-yu privately holding sacrificial rites to the Jin-chuans and visiting Qing-wen. In those sections, the reader can observe Bao-yu’s personal growth from experiencing life revelations and the foreshadowing of his fate. The shared points in these egression events illustrated Bao-yu interacting with people outside his everyday life and witnessing scenes where affection and desire were present. These points clearly depicted Bao-yu’s unique qing-chi-qing-zhong personality and the direction of his fate. |
