This paper is a methodological reflection on the methods and approaches of Confucian studies in history. Therefore, it aims at a comparative investigation and analysis of various methods and approaches. It includes the following points: first, the conflict between Yi-Li and Kao-Ju. Second, the disputation between historico-philological justification and transcendental justification. Third, the difference between correlative thinking and analytical thinking. Lastly, the outlook of Confucian studies: the approach of philosophical analysis and the complementarity of methods. On the other hand, this paper aims to demonstrate the bias of the various methods and approaches mentioned above and their ignorance of the analytical method and approach. It claims that syntactic analysis, including historical or descriptive analysis and formal or logical analysis, and conceptual or semantical analysis are necessary to investigate Confucian philosophical thought. The conclusion of this paper on future studies is to make a new start and progress of Confucian studies based on the understanding of the old learning, using various methods and approaches in a complementary way with an open mind is necessary. |
