The Essence and Value of Mandarin Chinese Characters from the Cultural Heritage Preservation Perspective

本文旨在論證正體漢字在文化資產保存上的意義與價值。首先，剖析漢字的形體演變與發展形勢，對於漢字形體的書寫演變進行簡述，並統整中國的漢字簡化政策、歸納臺灣的正體漢字宣導工作，進行兩方漢字政策的理念分析；再者，闡述漢字形體簡化導致的文化危機，由漢字書法的藝術損害、同字異形的使用困難，及傳統漢字的字義流失等三面向切入探討；最後，強調正體漢字的資產保存重要性，依序分析正體漢字的傳承窘境、現今正體漢字面臨的書寫危機，並辨明華語教學的漢字保存意涵。

The aim of the study is to confirm the essence and value of standard Chinese characters from the viewpoint of cultural heritage preservation. The study firstly dissects the glyph transformation of Chinese characters with illustrations that show the character formation development, and then reveals the different policymaking drives between the Chinese character simplification of China and the standard Chinese character promotion of Taiwan. Secondly, the study illustrates the three cultural crises caused by the Chinese character simplification: the damage to the artistic nature of Chinese calligraphy, the barriers to writing brought about by using the simplified glyph, and the inability of the simplified glyph to fully express the spirit of the standard Chinese characters. Thirdly, in order to clarify the potential threat being posed to the cultural inheritance of standard Chinese characters, the study emphasizes the significance of preserving standard Chinese characters and offers implications for the preservation of standard characters in Mandarin Chinese teaching.
