This paper is a report of a quasi-experimental research on the foreign language acquisition using Synchronous Computer Mediated Communication (SCMC). The experiment was executed in (1) pretest, (2) information gap type task, (3) post test, and (5) questionnaire survey. Specifically, (1) the achievement level o f the task is measured by t he score of the task. Also, (2) activeness of the negotiation of meaning is measured by analyzing the utterance in the task. Furthermore, (3) the acquisition level of the vocabulary used by the task is measured by the score of the post test. Finally, (4) the sense of intimacy to the task and the expectation level to the learning effect are measured by the total points of the questionnaire.Consequentially, the mean scores of the SCMC group were higher in the achievement level of the task and of degree of intimacy. On the other hand, the F to F group has higher frequency of the negotiation of meaning in the utterance.Unlike the research done in Europe and America, assuming that the meaning negotiation of CMC is more active, particularly in the acquisition of the vocabulary and the grammar, the results of our experiment show differently. That is, there are a lot of Taiwanese learners who feel CMC is more familiar and more easily than F to F. For example, the frequency of the negotiation of meaning in F to F group seems to be higher. |
