This paper reports on various aspects of the Japanese expression ”Aisatsu (a synonym of 'greetings' in English)”.When ”Aisatsu” is defined as fixed and courteous expressions which are exchanged on certain occasions expected by the society for making opening communication smooth and maintaining relationships comfortably, then the questions of 'on what occasions are ”Aisatsu” exchanged? 'and 'what expressions are used as ”Aisatsu”? inevitably occur. To answer these questions, first, a classification of ”Aisatsu” is tried in this paper.Secondly, the range which the term ”Aisatsu” covers and the cases in which ”Aisatsu” are exchanged or not exchanged in Japanese society are shown.Finally, the author refers to some linguistic features of the expressions in various ”Aisatsu”, andcontrasts them with a few other languages. |
