In Natsumesoseki's ”And Then”, the episode, ”Return Back to Nature” (自然の昔に帰る)in Chapter Fourteen, has been highly discussed. This paper aimed to gather and examine the varied perspectives on money in ”And Then”, as well as to explore the meaning of Daisuke's two hundred dollars. In ”And Then”, Hiraoka's unemployment leads to Daisuke's encounter with Michiyo. In the first chapter, Daisuke simultaneously received two letters from Hiraoka and his father. The two letters are closely related to the financial difficulties. In Chapter Eight, Daisuke gave two hundred dollars subsidized by his sister-in-law to Michiyo. On account of the two hundred dollars, Daisuke awakens in him a love for Michiyo. The value of the two hundred dollars, however, is far more than the financial support itself. Moreover, in the last chapter, Daisuke's eagerness to find a job reveals his anxiety and unease. This paper, therefore, initiated a discussion on Chapter Seven to delve into Daisuke's transformation in terms of his willingness ”to lend Michiyo money and to satisfy her.”Natsumesoseki weaves ideas about money into the texture of the story in ”And Then”. Thus, t he discussion focuses on a disinterested money-based relation; and the enjoyment which it brings about takes Daisuke back to ”Nature.” |
