The purpose of this study was to investigate parent’s views and opinions on teaching preschool children to swim, the obstacles as the parents faced, as well as environmental factors that might need to improve for preschool swimming lessons to work. Through the questionnaires, one can construct pictures of preschool children’s swimming conditions today and then identify ways to be better for the future. Parents of kindergarten children were chosen as the participants for the study. The conclusions obtained through statistical analysis were: (1) Participants were not keen on preschool swimming lessons; (2) Most of the participants would go to swim with their families every few months; (3) More than 1/3 of the participants thought that the best time to learn swimming was between ages of 4 and 5, but only about 1/4 of participants helped their children signing up for swimming lessons even though the registration fee they thought was reasonable; (4) The main factors constraining participants from signing their children up for swimming lessons were fear of water, not interested in swimming and troublesome; (5) Simple registration, cleanness of swimming pool, and close to home were factors that increased participants’ satisfaction; (6) Participants agreed that swimming instructors should have proper certification to teach swimming; and (7) Significant difference was found in the view of the appropriate level of inclusion for lifesaving knowledge and skills in the course content. All participants agreed on including these materials in the class. |
