The current authors have focused on blended learning (BL) of Chinese as a Second Foreign Language in a Japanese university. This course fuses a regular face-to-face class with after class e-Learning in order to increase the motivation to learn, encourage independent study after class, and to increase the effectiveness of course instruction. The authors previously proposed a 3-phase-Learning process via BL based on the theory of instructional design, and also presented a strategy for the motivational design of e-Learning materials for BL. In addition, the authors developed and published ''Gateway to Chinese,'' the first edition of multimedia materials for BL of basic university-level Chinese, based on the proposed process. In the current work, the authors conducted an experiment that evaluated ''Gateway to Chinese''- i.e., the materials for BL that the authors developed - in a year of actual classes of Chinese as a foreign language. The experiment used a learning management system to gauge a review of learned content; it used a survey to ascertain students' motivation to learn and their opinions, as well as periodic tests to verify the effectiveness of instruction. Results revealed that the materials for BL fulfilled their intended purpose and that those materials will allow classes to be conducted continually throughout the year. |
