Shi Ming Zheng was a post-war Taiwanese writer. He began to write in the 1960s and received wide attention in the literary circle in the 1980s. His works reveal the unfree environment backgrounds under the martial law system and the inner exploration writing characteristics under the western modernism trend of thought. Shi’s fictions Love and Death on the Island expose the protagonists’ inner evil and indirectly shows the evil deeds of official oppression under the martial law institution. The theme of evil inside and outside can be described as the distinctive feature of Shi’s novels and brings out the existential issues of “subjectivity” and “reflection”. Shi attempted to write with the eroticism and weakness about himself is unique in Taiwanese novelist in the post-war. Therefore, I plan to use Love and Death on the Island as a discussion text. Further, I’ll focus on three points of view, including the background of existentialism and works’ performance, the coercive institution and personal trauma, and self-eroticism and repentance exposure. Finally, I hope to re-examine the existence of the theme of Shi’s works and its significance. |
