Because of the trend of airport privatization and airline-specific gates, gradually airport gate assignment will be performed by airlines instead of airport authorities. In particular, from airlines' perspective, if arrival and departure flights with the same aircraft can be connected at the same gate, then the towing of airplanes can be decreased, so as to reduce airlines' station expenses. In addition, it can reduce the time block for flights assigned to gates and thus increase the capacity of the airline-specific gate. Therefore, this research develops a gate assignment model with the objective of maximizing the number of arrival and departure flight connections to reflect airlines' considerations in actual operations. We use mathematical programming methods, coupled with network flow techniques, to develop an arrival and departure flight network for the model. Finally, two scenario tests are performed concerning the current assignment operations and the data of a Taiwan airline at the Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport. The test results show that the model can effectively obtain optimal solutions under different situations. In addition, comparing with the current gate assignment by the airport authority, the model can obtain a gate assignment with more arrival and departure flight connections to enhance the performance of the airline's gate assignment operations. |
