Since 911, the United States treated Southeast Asia as the second front of its global counter-terrorism operation. The major concern of US strategic policies towards Southeast Asia is the network of international terrorist organisations, particularly on Jemaah Islamiyah and its intensive relations with Osama bin Laden's Al Qaeda. According to the‘Patterns of Global terrorism - Annual Report/2003-2004' launched by the US Department of States, the global society had witnessed the soaring of 'counter-terrorism' and 'terrorism upgrading simultaneously since the 911 in 2001. Followed the Middle-East, Southeast Asia has been the new target of international terrorism which introduced a forming ''Crescent of Terror'. After Bali, the cell organisations of Jemaah Islamiyah adapted new measures and focused on major 'soft targets' such as resorts in Bali and Marriot Hotel in Jarkata. This paper tries to explore the essence of Jemaah Islamiyah and clarifies its networking agencies as well as its implications for Southeast Asian security. |
