PCM, a high thermal capacitor, can absorb or release heat energy with minimal temperature change during the phase transition. The latent heat of phase transition is at least one to two orders of magnitude higher than the sensible heat that can be stored by the specific heat of material in its solid or liquid phase. It is an excellent passive cooling strategy for thermal management, in cases where the application involves high heat flux, low thermal inertia, cyclical operation or cyclical thermal environments. In practice, the PCM is a properly selected material contained in a hermetically sealed enclosure with heat transfer structure. It has numerous practical challenges that must be addressed to obtain a volume or mass optimized, fully functional and highly reliable design. |
