A Korean writer and a Taiwanese writer wrote novels with the same theme of the dilemma of a woman marrying two husbands in the 50s and 60s. There were Seo Ki-won's “A Blank Map” and Wang Chen-ho’s “An Oxcart for a Dowry.” This paper explores the causes of the love triangles in the two novels through the images and power struggles of the characters that the novels intend to portray. Furthermore, it discusses the effects of the narrative structures and the stream of consciousness techniques used in the novels cause. Finally, it explores the effects of cultural symbols in each of the two novels respectively, and points out the significance of the dilemma of a woman marrying two husbands. |
