After nearly forty years of operation, the Organization of African Unity (OAU) closed its door in 2002 and was replaced by the African Union (AU). In the past, lack of good governance was the main reason that African countries failed to receive much needed foreign assistance to alleviate poverty and promote development. With the new organization's principle of more active engagement and intervention, will we see improvement in governance? New Partnership for Africa's Development (Nepad) was born a year before the launching of the African Union and was later incorporated. Can the African Peer Review Mechanism (APRM) design be more effective in dealing with the West in acquiring necessary aid for development? With a complete introduction and analysis of Nepad, we present a midterm report of mixed results with much room for improvement. |
