The aim of this study is to examine the PRC's roles and strategies in the process of forming a new Asian regionalism. Currently, East Asia is witnessing the emergence of a few trade blocs and many ambitious projects implying closer integration in the region. According to the neo-realist perspective, regionalism is developing more fully in those areas of the world where there is a local hegemonic power that is able to create and maintain regional institutions. The hegemon bears the costs associated with providing political and diplomatic resources needed to establish the institutions through which regional interdependence can be attained. Further, the hegemon plays a key commercial and financial role in sustaining economic openness, such as serving as a large market and providing emergency liquidity in the face of currency crisis. By analyzing Beijing government's policies towards the process of forming a new Asian regionalism, this study provides new insights into the impact of hegemonic leadership on the formation of regionalism. |
