Since 1970s, the study of political philosophy has become a rapidly expanding frontier of political science, similar to empirical analysis decades earlier. Yet the revival of political philosophy in its liberal form raises new questions. For B. Barber, if positivist political science was the conquest of politics by scientific hubris, resuscitated liberal theory has often appeared to be the conquest of politics by hubristic philosophy. Barber's basic claim is that liberalism serves democracy badly if at all, and that 'strong democracy' is the only viable form modern democratic politics can take. The purpose of this article is to examine this claim and to evaluate the methodological arguments for the theory of strong democracy. |
