On January 14th, 2012, Taiwan held the first concurrent presidential and legislative election in its democratic history. Because of the decline in Ma Ying-jeou's approval rating, the challenge from the DPP under Tsai Ing-wen's leadership, and James Soong's entry into the race of presidency, the presidential campaign became very dramatic. The major difference between the KMT and the DPP's views was regarding the Cross-Strait relationship. While the former stresses the 92 consensus, the latter replaced it with the Taiwanese consensus. The two parties had serious debates on this issue. Finally, Ma defeated Tsai by 800,000 votes and won his re-election to presidency. This electoral outcome confirmed Taiwan's current political landscape of Pan-Blue and Pan-Green parties, i.e. KMT vs. DPP. |
