At the time of the presidential election in Taiwan, most concern centered on the election winner and his manifesto; however, major events that have affected Taiwan's security have occurred during each election. In this paper, China's failure in attempting to interfere with Taiwan's elections will be illustrated in examples from Chiang Ching-kuo's final election in 1984 to the nation's fifth democratic election in 2012. Examples on backfired Mainland China's interference that failed to achieve expected results are also provided. What's more, examples of internal affairs jeopardizing Taiwan's security are also discussed. Finally, the paper also discusses the 2012 presidential elections, during which Taiwan was confronted by questions on assuring Taiwan's security amid the growing economic relation with China. |
