Sugar-sweetened beverages (SSBs) are the major source of added sugar intake for people worldwide. SSBs include soda drinks, fruit drinks, energy drinks and so on. Sweeteners such as sucrose, concentrated fruit juice and high fructose corn syrup (HFCS) are common additives in the beverages. Many perspective cohort studies have revealed the relationship between SSBs consumption and long-term weight gain, even obesity. In Taiwan, consumers may easily get SSBs as package drinks in the supermarket or fresh-brewed tea drinks in beverage store. We disclose that SSBs consumption is associated with higher risk of developing chronic diseases such as type II Diabetes Mellitus, cardiovascular disease and hypertension. We also collated the sugar contents in package drinks and fresh tea beverages in Taiwan. Hopefully the information may provide the consumers an accurate concept on sugary drink intake. |
