Purpose
In recent years, the prevalence of tophi in the eyes has increased along with gout. However, there is a lack of understanding of ocular abnormality in gout patients for ophthalmologists. Therefore, it is necessary to pay close attention to the diagnosis of tophi in eyes.
Findings
Multiple reports have described the deposition of tophi in eyes, and they provide methods and a foundation for diagnosing tophi in eyes. The diagnosis of tophi in eyes requires information from the history, clinical features in eyes, ophthalmologic examinations and auxiliary examinations in gout patients.
Conclusion
Tophi in eyes should be suspected in gout patients showing ocular abnormality during gout attacks. A well-performed patient history and ophthalmologic examinations provide invaluable information that can be combined with auxiliary examinations to reach a confident diagnosis, and histopathologic examination is a major diagnostic evaluation for gouty tophi.
