It has been 40 years since 1973 when Taiwan formally initiated the gifted and talented education (GATE) on experimental base. According to the statistics of the Ministry of Education, there are 25,923 gifted and talented students, accounted for 0.8% of the total grade 1-12 student population, served by various GATE programs in the 2012 academic year. This article explores the critical events in the history of GATE in Taiwan and analyzes its current GATE policies and practices. By reviewing the past, it is hoped that we could foresee the future. |
