This article investigates Lung Ying-Tsung's龍瑛宗acceptance of Yokomitsu Riichi横光利一-Lung is the one who received an honorable mention with“A Town with Papaya Trees'' in Restructuring's 1936 novel competition. To be specific, this article reveals the traces of Lung's imitation of Yokomitsu's representative work“Head and Belly'' in Lung's“Encounter,'' Literature Taiwan, March 1941. The real intention of this parody is a defense against Saturday Man’s criticism and a call for creating a new Taiwanese culture. This article also pays attention to the statement in wartime“Overcoming Modernity'' and examines“Napoleon and Ringworm,'' the novel of Yokomitsu that Lung criticized in his essay“Napoleon and Yokomitsu Riichi.'' In doing so, it exhibits Lung's wavering of literary views when he faced realistic literature and romantic literature. The realisms in Taiwan during the Japanese occupation period are usually viewed together as socialist realism but socialist realism cannot fully explain these two texts. This should result in further ambivalence in colonial literature. |
