This article looked into intermediate level Taiwanese learners' awareness about and performance of oral interact ion in order to obtain suggestions for helping them to acquire advanced skills of speaking Japanese. An open-end questionnaire survey was conducted for 143 Japanese learners who were registered in intermediate level courses at a department of Japanese about problems they felt they had in speaking; it revealed that the learners were most concerned about lack of accuracy, limited size of vocabulary, and lack of knowledge of appropriate expressions. Interviews were given to 40 learners and their utterances were analyzed, and actual problems turned out to be related to skills of conducting interactions rather than to knowledge or accuracy. Thus, instructions for these intermediate learners should promote their awareness on importance of interactive skills. |
