In this era, learners of the Japanese language have more exposure to the language. However, still lack opportunities to interact with native speakers in everyday life. The author has spent much time reflecting on how to facilitate more interaction between learners and native speakers. This thesis sets out to explore 1) the topic with which people with different linguistic backgrounds initiate their communication in the cyberspace; and 2) the extent to which conversation exercises influence learners' language learning experience. This paper finds that the following topics are each selected a number of times: ”current location (18),” ”begin: homework (13),” ”end (13),” ”interest (11),” ”name (8),” ”weather (7),” ”identity and occupation (6),” ”shared experience (6),” among others. Language learners expressed their approval of the goal of these exercises. However, learners find it difficult to ”provide a topic” and to ”keep a conversation going on a certain topic.” In the future, the author will work on how best to incorporate the opinions of these language learners into teaching practice. |
