How do Kazak and Uzbek university students perceive China and the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI)? The author conducted a survey at Al-Farabi Kazakh National University and Uzbekistan University of World Economy and Diplomacy to answer this question. The following research employs the results of this survey to illuminate the perspectives and impressions held by Kazakh and Uzbek college students on China while simultaneously analyzing how views of China relate to whether students agree with the BRI. The survey results demonstrate that perspectives on China are generally positive and confirms that support for the BRI is correlated to an extent with a positive view of China and anticipation for economic cooperation. However, while views on the BRI in Uzbekistan are optimistic, in Kazakhstan perspectives are not necessarily sanguine. In particular, there are few positive responses regarding the increase of Chinese laborers, proving that Uzbeks do not believe the BRI will provide actual benefits. |
