This paper examines how the government in Taiwan reconstructs the ancestor discourse to transform Taiwan into an overseas Chinese state. This began with President Lee Tenghui. However, overseas Chinese who used to identify Taiwan as their motherland respond by shifting their loyalty toward the Chinese mainland. The government in Taiwan, wanting to maintain overseas Chinese' loyalty will have to represent Taiwan as a motherland of the overseas Chinese. As a result, whether or not the Chinese mainland is a motherland of Taiwan Becomes a politically touchy issue. This paper reports the ambivalence of the government in Taiwan toward Taiwan's self-identification as an overseas Chinese state. |
