The 911 attack organised by Al Queda is a new type terrorism in the twenty-first century. The targets of this lethal attack, the World Trade Center in New York and the Pentagon in Washington, are symbols of American economic and military hegemony. The 911 attack not only declared the war on American foreign policy of unilateralism, but indicated the formation of 'post-modem terrorism' in the new era. After 911, strengthening 'homelru1d security' as well as constructing 'anti-terrorism alliance' have formed American cored strategic thinking of the new century. In practice, US publicised 'National Strategy for Homeland Security' as the blueprint of comprehensive homeland security mobilisation. Besides, US declared war on pro-terrorism countries and seek to establish an alliance with anti-terrorism countries. American anti-terrorism, a 'praetorian unilateralism' mind in essence as well as a 'carrot and stick' strategy in action, challenged the international security status quo directly and immediately. This paper aims to explore the effects of American anti-terrorism actions and its implication on Southeast Asian security. |
