This study investigated the cognition of Southern and Northern Vietnamese learners of Mandarin concerning the tonal similarity between Mandarin and Vietnamese. Subjects were asked to judge the similarity of each Mandarin tone to Vietnamese tones via questionnaire. The results revealed two significant findings. First, the two groups of Mandarin learners showed different cognition of Mandarin-Vietnamese tonal similarity due to the detailed differences between Southern and Northern Vietnamese. It indicated that when making a similarity judgment, learners took not only the acoustic and perceptual properties of tones but also the relative relation among the tones in the system into consideration. Second, although both groups of Vietnamese learners performed similar error patterns, their errors were attributed to different affecting factors. |
