The bureaucratic system of medieval China after the fall of the Tang dynasty had been divided into two parts: the ''Yuanfeng bureaucratic system'' 元豐官制 of the Northern Song dynasty, which survived through the Five Dynasties period, and the ''Tianjuan bureaucratic system,'' lasting through the Liao dynasty into the Jin dynasty. In order to observe the continuity of the bureaucratic system from the Tang dynasty to the Jin dynasty from a vertical perspective as well as analyzing from a horizontal perspective the interactions of bureaucratic systems between the Liao, the late Tang and the Five Dynasties period, and the Northern Song dynasty, the matter of the jianjiao title 檢校銜 of the Liao dynasty-as well as its relationship to other titles of the time-will be fully discussed to prove that the Liao functioned as a bridge for the bureaucratic systems of the Tang and Jin dynasties. |
