This case report described the nursing process of assisting an 18-year-old man with type 1 diabetes by employing the concept of empowerment. The nursing period lasted from January 9 to January 20, 2017. Using Gordon's functional health patterns as the framework for assessment, the author collected data by observing and interviewing the patient and identified the following nursing problems: risk of unstable blood glucose, ineffective health maintenance, and limited family coping strategies. During the early stages of the nursing process, the patient had poor compliance with diabetes treatment, resulting in poor glycemic control, which required close monitoring by the parents. Therefore, the patient and his family were guided through an empowerment-based program to improve self-care behavior and manage diabetes in a collaborative manner to achieve optimal health. We hope this nursing experience serves as a reference for other clinical nurses when facing similar cases. (Tzu Chi Nursing Journal, 2020; 19:5, 131-140) |
