Relying on the jianghan plain, Shasi is rich in cotton and grain. Before opening the port for trade in 1896, the economic exchanges between Shasi and Sichuan was frequent. At the beginning of the twentieth century as demand for cotton increased in response to the growth of the spinning industry in Japan and Shanghai. At the time that the Chinese cotton market was undergoing rapid changes in response to the increased demand. Moreover, the interpenetration between the traffic and the commerce networks had made it possible that the commercial system of the cotton commerce of Shasi come into being . Shashi cottons were gradually entering the nationwide cotton market, and became a significant link in the cotton trading market. The demand for cotton suitable for machine spinning was high and merchants stressed the importance of the quality of the cotton they purchased. So every factor joined together, embodied a certain relation between rural development and urban development. |
